Volunteering with CLAN WA
We have a team of over 100 trained volunteers working with families across WA.
We provide regular volunteer training throughout the year and you can learn more about becoming a CLAN WA Volunteer by contacting a branch close to you.
The Role:
The main role of the CLAN WA volunteer is to maintain consistent and constant contact with the family by visiting once a week in their home. The duration of the visit can be from 1-2 hours and the contact can last for 6-8 weeks for a Parent Link volunteer and an average of 6-8 months for a Family Support volunteer. The volunteer offers support to families in developing and strengthening their family life. All volunteers are required to attend a training course to prepare them for their role. The training course enables volunteers to:
- Gain insight into the CLAN WA home visiting service
- Understand what to expect in the role as a CLAN WA volunteer
- Link with other volunteers and the Coordinator
- Understand the issues that arise for families
- Understand their own attitudes and responses and how that affects working with families
Topics:
A wide range of topics are covered during the training and include:
- Exploring volunteering
- Understanding families
- Communication skills
- Empathy
- Self-esteem
- Self-care
- Parenting
- Community linking
Personal Qualities Required:
- Confidentiality
- Commitment and reliability
- Non-judgmental attitude
- Strong interpersonal skills
- Understanding of and sensitive to cultural and child rearing practice
